Industrial and Large

  • Size: With two build sizes, 8 and 3.375 cubic feet, the T-Rex 3D printers are as big as or bigger than considerably more expensive comparable machines:
     
    • T-Rex-18: 18” x 18” x 18” (3.375 cubic feet)
    • T-Rex-24: 24” x 24” x 24” (8 cubic feet)
       
  • Optional Ventilated Enclosure and Stand:
     
    • Enclosure: The T-Rex Enclosure (in 24" and 18" sizes) is a purpose-built enclosure that provides protection for the printer from dust and stray air currents. It also protects the user from accidental contact with hot parts and pinch points. Finally, it allows the print volume to be exhausted outside via a standard 4" vent.
       
    • Full-Sized Stand: The T-Rex Full-Sized Stand (in 24" and 18" sizes) is built to match up with the Enclosure and provide stable support for the printer.
       
    • MiniStand: The T-Rex MiniStand (in 24" and 18" sizes) is the most compact and economical stand for the T-Rex printer. It has a customized table-top with pockets machined into the top surface that perfectly fit the adjustable legs of your T-Rex printer. It also has adjustable legs with heavy-duty slip-pads, which allow the stand to be repositioned easily on a carpeted surface, even with the printer on it. It comes flat-packed in a cardboard box and is easy to assemble, only requiring a single tool - a 4mm Allen wrench.
       
  • Rigid: 3DMonstr T-Rex printers are build with a a strong and rigid frame with ballscrews on all axes for more consistent and accurate prints.

    3DMonstr T-Rex printers' gantry frame is built from high strength aluminum U-channel extrusions and custom connecting blocks machined to exacting tolerances from 25mm (.98 inch) billets of aircraft grade aluminum. Early in the design process, we rasn simulation analyses for a bare frame with only guide rails. It provided excellent aligning and guiding, and the structure kept its rigidity. We considered adding a frame, but we wanted the design to scale easily and fold for storage and transport. Framing with u-channel material provides the necessary rigidity while allowing bigger build volumes. This rigid and stable structure is able to provide build volumes from 12"x12"x12" to 24"x24"x24", providing 1 to 8 cubic feet (1,728 to 13,824 cubic inches) in which to build your dreams.

    The X- and Y-axes are built using linear rails, while the dual Z-axes are all built from 12mm guide rods and a precision ballscrew assembly with 16mm linear bearings containing five ball bearing races. The five races not only support large loads because more balls are in contact with the rod, but crucially do not couple to any axis so that future wear will not introduce any backlash (wiggle.)

    Ballscrews The ball nut bearings ensure precision by eliminating backlash of the carriage against the shaft. Similarly, one of the fixed ball bearings at the end of the central rod improves precision by eliminating backlash of the ball screw itself. Together, these low friction and tight components provide precise linear motion control with no backlash, prevent sideways motion and ensure that there is no coupling of the major axes. Any imperfections that are introduced over time by wear cancel each other out, so that the printer remains consistent along all axes.

    Axes are driven through heavy duty cast aluminum timing pulleys and Kevlar-reinforced zero stretch urethane timing belts, which are turned by the high torque NEMA 23 motors on all three axes. These larger then common in the industry motors are driven through stand-alone 5Amp motor drivers. All motors are protected by covers.

    Everything about this design adds the safety margin required to enable you to drive the motors hard without worrying about the quality of the print.

    Both models share all the custom machined blocks and plates, which are the most expensive components. In growing from one size to the next, we're changing only the length of the guide rods, ballscrews, structural U-channels, and the length and width of the print bed plate.

    These machines are large enough and precise enough to allow builds that previously would have been shipped to 3D print services.

Extruders

  • Up to four filament extruders: Our 3DMonstr T-Rex printers can house up to four filament extruders that are independently heated and water-cooled to achieve perfect temperature control throughout. The GentleDrive(™) extruder drive train technology allows printing with a huge range of materials (from Polycarbonate to Paraffin wax, and everything in between)

    The extruder is an original design with a compact x-y footprint, so that multiples can be stacked without losing build volume. It's almost .5" smaller in width than most of the extruders out there and weighs about half too. We named it LittleTitan-Filament (LilTi for short). Because it's powerful for its little size, parts of it are made out of Titanium, and it's an extruder for filament.

    By default, our printers are configured with two extruders, but adding up to two more is as easy as plugging in one cable, two little tubes and hanging the extruder on to the QuickMount bracket. More than one extruder will enable makers to add a temporary support material, add additional colors, or additional materials. Each extruder can be outfitted with nozzles of different sizes.

  • 1.75 mm filament: LilTi-Filament extruders are designed to work with standard commodity 1.75mm filaments.
     
  • Nozzle sizes .3 - 1 mm: We offer a selection of nozzles for use with our LilTi 1.75mm Filament extruders, from a very fine .350mm to over-sized .800mm. Each nozzle is color-coded according to size.

  • Wide range of materials: Currently, we can print PLA, ABS, HIPS, PVA, Nylon, PET, NinjaFlex, and Paraffin Wax. And now that we have a strong, powerful foundational structure, our future plans include continuing to build our line of extrudinary (OK, we had to get that in at least once!) extruders, expanding the practical applications of 3D printers, and allowing you to print the full range of plastics, soft pastes, and food products.

    Printing soft pastes like paraffin wax, clay and silicon rubber, allows the creation of comfortable shoes and plugs for lost paraffin wax casting.

Automation

  • MonstrControl (MC): For those customers who can't (or don't want to) dedicate a computer to controlling their T-Rex printer, we offer the MonstrControl stand-alone controller (MC). MonstrControl, as shipped by us, is a RasperryPi 3 computer with a 5" touch-sensitive screen and a camera mounted on the T-Rex printer on a special set of brackets. It runs the community (free) version of the Repetier-Server control software. It is also compatible with the OctoPrint control software (also free). If you select either of these options, we will contribute $10 to the corresponding project.

    Without MonstrControl, you must use a computer to control the machine. This works just fine. We recommend Repetier-Host software to control the printer, but MatterControl and Simplify3D software work well also. In this case, all printing is done through the control computer, and there are no additional means to do so.

    By adding the MonstrControl option, you get the following additional capabilities:

    • You no longer need a dedicated computer to control the printer, MC does everything you need to control the printer
    • You can control the printer right from the MC, using a stylus on a touch-sensitive screen built into the MC
    • You can connect to the MC from any web browser either via WiFi or via a wired Ethernet interface
    • The MC includes a built-in video camera, which allows live-streaming your print job to any web-enabled device
    • With the Commercial version of Repetier Server, you can also automatically generate downloadable time-lapse videos
       
  • Multizone(TM) Heated Bed Technology for energy-efficient bed heating: Our Multizone(™) Heated Bed is a marvel of engineering. It is a complex module consisting of several layers (in top to bottom layers):
    • Borosilicate glass printing surface, which will not distort, shrink or grow when heated because of its low thermal coefficient
    • Individual, 6" x 6" x 1/8" aluminum heat spreader plates (one per Heat Zone), to help even out the temperatures. They are separated by a 1/4" air gap to help contain the heat generated by each Zone
    • Individual 6" x 6" 60W silicone heating pads, one per Heat Zone
    • Large insulation plate (18" or 24", as appropriate) machined from 3/8" Garolite stock to trap most of the heat moving downward from the Heat Zones
    • Electronics and cabling layer (Heater Distribution boards, junction connectors, cables, etc.) that distribute and control the power and sensor signals among the Heat Zones
    • Second insulation plate, to cover the Heated Bed Module from below for safety
       
  • Automatic Bed Leveling: Only a single bit of hardware is required -- a Z-Probe, and the rest is done in software. When you tell the printer to measure the bed, it goes through a pre-set process of measuring the height of the print bed in three locations. It then uses this information to compensate for any tilt that it senses.

    To make this process basically painless, we added a bed height sensor, called a Z-Probe, to the printer (near the extruders) that will measure the bed height. If the bed is tilted in any way, the T-Rex firmware (Repetier) will raise and lower the Z-axis to compensate for it on the fly, and thus ensure that the printed part matches the tilt and that the Z-axis will always remain the correct height above it. This allows for solid adhesion from the very first layer.

    When you receive your printer, this simple auto leveling process will be part of your initial setup. Once you run it, you will not need to run the process again unless you move the printer or remove the glass bed.

Transportability

  • Factory Assembled, Bed and Gantry Separate: T-Rex can still fit through doors!: We wanted to eliminate one of the irritating issues of large 3D printers. The problem -- you can’t get through regular sized doors with them! So, you either can’t get one, or you need to get it in parts and assemble it yourself once it arrives. The problem with this is that they’re difficult to put together. Doing so requires skill, tools, and significant time and effort. We wanted to be able to factory assemble your printer AND have you be able to bring into all rooms. We built the solution into our architecture! All 3DMonstr printers come in two parts -- the gantry is separated from the table bed for easy transport -- and can be put together within minutes. (The only tools needed are as set of metric Allen wrenches.)
